Spring Valley Brewery Kyoto

The title has sampled "Allspace in a Notshall". This is a term from "Finnegans Wake" written by James Joyce, and it aims to describe that macrocosmos can be functioning especially in microcosmos.

"Finnegans Wake" is known as a monumental achievement in modern literature. In the work, mythology and reality are plotted complicatedly and so overlapped. There are dozens of playful linguistic experiments, and it is extremely difficult to decipher or translate.

The main character's name Tim Finnegan is also given the experiment. Finnegan=Fin+again is coined in beginning and ending, alpha and omega. "Finnegan" competes at the point of beginning and ending. In addition, "Wake" implies meanings of awake and or boats' wake. Therefore, the man's name describes awake of life and its journey. Also, Finnegan is not singular. The life suggests to all human-being including "you". This work is not a story about a specific person, but is about the opening of human exploration and its end, moreover the earth.

There are full of intoxication, infatuation or contemporary helplessness, in the same time the daily landscapes is weaved with existing mythology. At this exhibition, the landscapes of beginning of ending, fiction and nonfiction, micro and macro will be poured in to "your" glass at Spring Valley Brewery's hall. This exhibition will be based on a story beginning from the earth, and will produce a new landscape with a theme of native gods.

本展タイトルは「全空間を胡桃のなかへ/Allspace in a Notshall 」をサンプリングしたものだ。これはジェイムズ・ジョイス、『フィネガンズ・ウェイク』”Finnegans Wake”の言葉であり、ミクロコスモスの中でこそ、マクロコスモスが機能しうることを意味する。

　『フィネガンズ・ウェイク』は近代文学の金字塔として知られ、神話と現実が錯綜し、オーバーラップする。この物語を構築する言葉には、幾重にも遊びが施され、解読および翻訳は極めて困難である。

　主人公であるティム・フィネガン、彼の名前にもまた言葉の遊戯が施されている。フィネガン＝Fin＋again、終わりと始まり、阿であり吽、アルファでありオメガである。フィネガンは、「起点」と「終点」に、せめぎ合う。また、Wake は英語で「覚醒」あるいは「航跡」を意味する。すなわち人生の覚醒=始まり、そしてその行程を意味する。そして『フィネガンズ・ウェイク』のタイトルからも分かるように、フィネガンは“複数形”であり、一人ではない。その複数は人類全体、ひいては“あなた”をも暗示する。この作品の主題は、だれか特定の人物の物語ではなく、人類の開闢と終焉の物語なのだ。人類が住まう地球つまり大地の物語といえる。

　「酒(さか)んに鋤(すき)ふり耕し男。ほほほほ、フィンさん、あんたってのはまた立(た)ち氏(し)ね！穴曜日(けつようび)の朝になると、ほら、葡萄酒になっちゃって！　ほら、葡萄酒になっちゃって！寝(ね)て曜日(ようび)の宵になると、あら酢(す)っかりだめ！　はははは、フィンさん、またまた不淫念願(フイんねんガン)するんだから！」

　そこには、酩酊、痴情、あるいは現世の“どうしようもなさ”、それらが溢れると同時に、日常茶飯の風景は既存の神話と織り合わせされ、物語られる。本展は始まりと終わり、虚構と現実、ミクロからマクロの異種交配の風景が、来訪者である“あなた”が今手にもつ小さなグラス、SVB迎賓館のホールに集約される。本展は、大地から始まる物語を基盤とし、土地々々の神話が主題となる新たな情景が生み出す。

A Western-style house as an annex at Spring Valley Brewery Kyoto is one of the oldest existing modern architecture. The building built between Taisho and Showa has been designed based on a trend topic of earthquake-proof at that time, and has been used as a guest house. When Tateisi inspected the venue with the co-exhibitor Kazumicihi Komatsu, the background history of the earthquake-proofed architecutre and the fact that there is a container of water under Kyoto as big as the largest lake in Japan, lake Biwa, called us the relationship. This was the start point to consider about the theme "verticality" and "shake".

Spring Valley Brewery Kyotoの離れにあたる洋館は現存する京都最古のモダン建築の一つである。大正から昭和にかけて建てられた本館は当時もっぱら重要な研究対象であった免震・耐震建築の成果物として生まれ、迎賓館として時を過ごした。共作者である小松千倫と現地視察を行った際、本館の歴史背景にある耐震・免震建築と、京都の地下には琵琶湖と同容量の水を蓄えた京都水盆が眠っていることとが、浮力を活用した免震構造との関連性を呼び起こした。ここから本作のテーマである「垂直性」「揺れ」を着想した。

We installed a pillar in the main hall on the 2nd floor. The visitor will notice when they enter the hall that there is sound playing from the pillar. Suddenly, the sense of eery pops up, and the visitor starts to think since when the pillar is existed. As following, they will also notice at excursion every dimensions of the pillar generates the sound.

本展メインエリアになる2階ホールに柱を建てた。ホールに入ると柱から音が鳴っていることが分かる。はじめは違和感なくそこに在った柱に疑問が生まれる。これはいつからたっているのか、と。音は天井近くからも床近くからも聴こえる。回遊すると4面それぞれが異なる音を発している。
